Sciatica is a severe pain in the leg caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in the body, and about the size of your thumb. They are found down the back of each leg. These nerves can become irritated or can be affected by inflammation of nearby soft tissues. When this occurs, doctors call the condition sciatica. The bulging or herniation of the soft discs that separate each spinal bone can cause this problem as well. Injury to the sciatic nerve and its branches result in pain that may extend from the buttock down the back of the leg. Other symptoms may include foot drop, (the inability to flex the foot), loss of sensation over the leg and foot, bladder dysfunction, impotence and loss of bowel control.
The chiropractic approach is to use carefully directed and controlled pressure to remove the interference from spinal structures. This procedure is called an "Adjustment" or "manipulation." Sciatica, like other health problems that can be traced to the spine, more often than not responds favorably to chiropractic care.
